The honest answer
For an hour of your time in Kathmandu, yes, and the reason is access rather than speed. Everest is not visible from the city at all. It is 160 km away behind the Mahalangur range, and the ground alternative is a twelve-day walk. An hour in the air is the only way to see the mountain on the morning you are free.
The flight, minute by minute
Most listings include a transfer, and it comes early: the range clouds over as the plains warm up, so mountain flights are scheduled from about half past six.
Tribhuvan’s domestic side, separate from international. A boarding card, a mountain map of the route, and a wait that is often longer than the flight.
A turboprop with one seat each side of the aisle, so every passenger has a window. You are given a seat number; both sides see the same mountains.
East out of the valley. Within ten minutes the foothills give way and the range appears on the left, running away to the horizon.
Langtang, then Gaurishankar, then Cho Oyu at 8,188 metres. The crew points each one out and hands round a map. This is the part nobody expects to enjoy as much as they do.
Nuptse, Lhotse, then Everest itself — a dark pyramid with a plume of snow off the summit. The aircraft turns here, which is why the return leg is the other side’s turn.
On most operators every passenger is invited forward, one at a time, for a minute or two with the best view on the aircraft. Ask if nobody offers.
One hour gone, and a certificate at the door if the operator does them. You are back at your hotel before most of Kathmandu has had breakfast.

Here is the fact that decides whether an Everest flight tour is worth the money, and it is not a price: you cannot see Mount Everest from Kathmandu. The city sits in a bowl at about 1,400 metres with hills on every side, and the mountain is 160 km away behind the Mahalangur range. People arrive expecting a skyline and find a valley.
The ground alternative is twelve to fourteen days. That is the round trip on foot to Everest Base Camp, and it is one of the great walks on earth. It is also two weeks, a permit, a guide and a serious amount of altitude. An Everest flight tour is one hour.
The flight is not a compromise version of the trek. It is a different thing entirely. You fly east along the range at about 25,000 feet, which is roughly eye level with the summits, and you see seven named peaks in fifty minutes rather than one mountain after two weeks of walking towards it.
Everybody gets a window. Mountain-flight aircraft are configured with a single seat on each side of the aisle for exactly this reason, so nobody is in a middle seat. The aircraft also turns at Everest and flies back down the other side, so both rows see the same mountains.
And on most operators you get a turn in the cockpit. One passenger at a time, a minute or two each, through the windscreen. It is not written on most listings and it is the thing people talk about afterwards. Ask if nobody offers.
The helicopter listings are a different product at five to ten times the price. From $1,100 a helicopter lands in the Khumbu — at Base Camp itself or at Kalapatthar at 5,545 metres. You are on the ground at altitude, which the plane never is.
And the last thing, which no listing says plainly: the flight goes at dawn or not at all. The range clouds over as the plains warm up, so mountain flights are scheduled from about half past six and the decision is made at first light. Leave a spare morning.

The second clear window, with Base Camp occupied and visible from the air. Haze builds through April as the plains warm up.
Dec – Feb
Winter mornings are often crystalline and the flights are cheap and empty. The trade is occasional cold fronts that close the range for days.
Jun – Sep
The range is in cloud most mornings and cancellations are the norm rather than the exception. Flights still run when a window opens.
Worth knowing
Book the earliest departure of the day. The Himalaya clouds over as the plains warm up, so the first flights of the morning go far more often than the later ones — and if yours is cancelled, the operator has the rest of the day to move you.
Ask which side of the aircraft you are on. Every seat is a window seat, but the range is on the left going out and on the right coming back. If you have a preference for the first half, say so at check-in.
Take your turn in the cockpit. Most operators invite passengers forward one at a time. It is not on the listing, it lasts a minute or two, and it is the best view on the aircraft.
Leave a spare morning in Kathmandu. Cloud cancels mountain flights, and it cancels them at dawn rather than the night before. A flight booked for your last morning has no second attempt.
