The case for
Invisible from the city, and a fortnight on foot.
The mountain is invisible from the city. Kathmandu sits in a bowl at about 1,400 metres with hills all round it, and Everest is 160 km away behind the Mahalangur range. Hotel roof terraces sell mountain views and deliver Langtang. This surprises almost every visitor.
The alternative is a fortnight. Twelve to fourteen days on foot with permits, a guide and 5,364 metres at the end. It is one of the great walks on earth and it is not a week.
An hour buys seven named peaks at eye level. Langtang, Gaurishankar, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Lhotse, Everest and Makalu, with the crew naming each one, at roughly the height of the summits.
And it costs $100. Which, for the only access there is to the highest mountain on earth, is not a lot of money.

In the monsoon, unless you have days to spare. June to September cancels most mornings. You will be rescheduled, then rescheduled again, and if you have a single free morning you will most likely end up with a refund and no mountain. Book it, by all means — but treat it as a bonus rather than a plan.
The helicopter listings, unless the landing is the point. From $1,100 they cost ten times the cheapest Everest flight tour and they do not show you more of the mountain from the air — they fly lower. What they buy is twenty minutes on the ground at over 5,000 metres. If that is what you want, they are the only way. If it is not, you are paying ten times over for a lower view.
The other small case: if you are genuinely frightened of flying, an hour of turbulence-free cruise is still an hour in an aircraft, and nobody should be talked into it.
